Flashmob to the balconies: music unites Italy in quarantine

Italy is experiencing a paradoxical situation and no, we are not talking about the Covid-19 emergency. We refer to the fact that, although it is divided into many small pieces, it is proving more united than ever. Since last week, in fact, several flashmobs have been organized in all cities, transforming the balconies, windows and terraces of all Italians into 2.0 stages. Colored flags, lighted torches, improvised choreography, DJs that cheer up the neighborhood, this is the scenario that, for a week now, we have witnessed throughout Italy. Joyful choirs that bounce from north to south, passing through the center, uniting, as perhaps never before, a country forcibly divided. In the alleys of Naples the notes of "Napul'è" by Pino Daniele resound, in Rome, however, "Roma Capoccia" by the unique and inimitable Antonello Venditti is sung at the top of the voice, and then, again, masterpieces made in Italy such as "Il sky is always bluer ”and“ Volare ”. Many voices, of ordinary people and celebrities, in unison to shout to the world that "we are here and we will not give up". Staying indoors does not necessarily imply total isolation. Even just looking out the window to chat with the neighbor or, simply ask, "how are you?" it helps us to feel close despite the distance, but above all, it makes us feel human and this, in such a delicate moment, is good for the heart.

"No man is an" island "

"No man is an island", the passage of John Donne then becomes the motto of all of Italy. In a society that is increasingly self-referenced and based on individualism, we are rediscovering ourselves altruistic and in need of contact. It is right now that, forced into physical distance, we feel the need to feel close at least morally. On the notes of the Hymn by Mameli, we witness patriotism in its best form, proud of a country that is facing this challenge with courage and is ready to onerous sacrifices to get up stronger than before. And our wish, then, is not only to get out of it as soon as possible, but to get out of it by reminding us of what has been and how much the other is important to us.
