The Aqua are back with great news in store: do you remember them?

Sit comfortably because the news we are about to give you will literally drive you crazy: the Aqua are returning. Yes, you got it right, the Scandinavian band that made us unleash between the 90s and the new millennium to the sound of "I'm a Barbie Girl, in a Barbie world, life in plastic is fantastic", announce their return with a post on Instagram: "Big news coming, stay tuned".

And of course we stay tuned! The Aqua constitute a milestone of bubblegum, a sub-genre of disco music stand out for their playful motifs, light contents and high-pitched female voice perfectly mixed with the part rapped by the male interpreter.

Since 1997 the consecration thanks to the single Barbie, extracted from the Aquarium album and accompanied by a nice video in which the members of the band stage, parodying it, the perfect world of the cult doll. The song led them to have a dispute with Mattel, the historic American toy manufacturer, which accused them of appropriating the brand without authorization and of having returned a deleterious image of Barbie as a sexual object. Controversy aside, the hit became a smash and ranks first in the charts of Italy, England, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Australia and Sweden, selling 33 million copies. From that moment on, the Aqua have been churning out one success after another up to the "brilliant" idea which traditionally declares the death of any band: the dissolution to pursue a career as a soloist. Spoiler: it didn't go well.

It will be precisely because they failed to break through on their own that, over the years, Aqua have met several times, as in 2008 for the release of the album Greatest Hits, with historical pieces and some news and in 2011 with the single 'How R U Doin', followed by the group's third album, 'Megalomania'. The outcome was certainly not that of the beginnings, perhaps due to the inability to adapt to the changes of the time.

We hope that this is the right time to be able to return to humming their cheerful refrains, perhaps in a more modern key like “life in plastic is NOT fantastic”.
