October, breast cancer prevention month

October is the month of prevention for breast cancer, an unmissable appointment to remind us all of the importance of prevention. Unfortunately, breast cancer affects one in eight women in their lifetime and about five thousand women in their lifetime. year they fall ill with this pathology.

5-7% of breast cancers are hereditary: the cause are the mutated genes transmitted from parents to children and about a quarter of cases concerns the presence of mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

Thanks to the constant work of research, survival five years after diagnosis can be said to be continuously increasing: in the last twenty "years, in fact, it has gone from" 81 to "87%, an excellent result! The researchers are committed with great dedication to to study the molecular mechanisms that lead to tumor development, to try to develop new screening tools for early diagnosis, to evaluate the effectiveness of new drugs against the different subtypes of the disease and to analyze the specific alterations of each individual tumor to offer women targeted therapies with innovative drugs capable of counteracting the growth of neoplastic cells and the spread of metastases.

Despite the continuous advances made by science, the month of October was dedicated to prevention precisely to underline its importance in fighting the disease before it is too late. An annual visit to your gynecologist should be a must, whatever yours is. age. If you are between 40 and 50, if you are familiar with breast cancer, you should have specific tests, while between 50 and 70 it is important to have a mammogram every two years.

Beyond the controls, prevention also involves adopting a healthier lifestyle: no to smoking, yes to physical activity and a balanced diet rich in vegetables. Then pay attention to possible alarm bells such as the presence a lump, redness and thickening of the skin around the nipple or changes in its shape, loss of blood, serum or milk, axillary swelling. Finally, learn with our video to practice self-examination:

October, month of prevention: a battle to be won together

Also this year - on the occasion of October, the month of prevention - the AIRC invites us all to support the work of researchers so that even the most aggressive forms of breast cancer can be treated. The invitation is to wear a Pink Ribbon to remind anyone we will encounter the importance of prevention, as well as wanting to show closeness to the women who are fighting their battle.

Unfortunately, every day, according to statistics, about 135 women discover that they have breast cancer, and although today it is less fearful than in the past and mortality is constantly decreasing, they will have to prepare to face a hard and courageous path. The AIRC has a goal that is equally so: to do so as to achieve 100% survival, and this is the reason why it has chosen as a symbol a pink ribbon different from the others, incomplete, to represent its challenge.

Thanks to research funding, it has been possible to improve the quality of treatments, both in terms of efficacy and tolerability, and it has also been understood that breast cancer is not a "single disease, but at least four different types of diseases based on to the different molecular alterations that cause it. Thanks to this discovery we are proceeding to develop more and more targeted and effective treatments.

AIRC has allocated more than 50 million euros to the fight against cancer in the last 5 years, but there is still a lot to do and the month of October invites us all to work together to win this battle together.

AIRC and Estée Lauder together in the fight against breast cancer

For the fifth consecutive October, The Estée Lauder Companies renews its partnership with AIRC on the occasion of the Breast Cancer Campaign (BCC), the prevention campaign for the fight against breast cancer conceived 27 years ago by Evelyn H. Lauder.

This year it is the city of Florence that gives greater visibility to the countryside with a very special event: the pink lighting of Ponte Vecchio. In recent years it had touched Milan and Rome. In fact, the idea is to choose a new city every year to illuminate to bring light and awareness to a central theme: prevention, in fact. At the same time, this year too, the hashtag #TimeToEndBreastCancer will be launched, to emphasize the " importance of acting now.

This year's campaign offers many different pink ribbons, of different shapes and sizes, precisely to underline the variety of breast cancers that affect each of us in many ways. We are all called into question: a small gesture is enough for a universal struggle.

Ambassador of the 2019 edition is Paolo Stella, already a great supporter of the Breast Cancer Campaign in past editions, who expresses himself as follows: "It is a matter of great pride for me to be the official face of The Estée Lauder Companies Italia's Breast Cancer Campaign which, once again this year for the fifth time, has chosen to fight this battle together with AIRC. I am proud to wear this pink ribbon and remind all women (but also men) of the importance of prevention and research to make breast cancer a treatable disease. It is important not to stop fighting, to also concretely support research and guarantee continuity to the work of our scientists: we owe it to the many people waiting for a concrete answer to win their very personal battle!”.

You can contribute to the research by buying one of the following products from Estée Lauder Companies Italia in October, which will donate 5 euros to the AIRC for each purchase: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion +, Clinique Take the day off challenge, Darphin Intral Redness Relief Soothing Serum, Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II, La Mer The Treatment Lotion, Origins Drink up ™ Intensive Overnight Mask (in this case the proceeds will be donated 100% to AIRC), Glamglow Glowlace.
