How are the zodiac signs born?
As mentioned, the stars have always played a central role in the life of the ancients. Theirs was a constant point of reference, the certainty of always finding them in the sky in the same place. In the first and second millennium BC, the ancients consulted the stars for their divination practices, which was an essential moment in their civilization, which did not distinguish the sacred from what we now define secular. The sky was in fact considered the home of the deities, so it is easy to understand how to observe it carefully was practice.
The first of what may seem a testimony of an early reference to the zodiac signs is the so-called Venus tablet by Ammi-Saduqa, found in Nineveh, which reports the recording of some astronomical observations on the conjunctions of Venus with the Sun. These 12 signs, which are configured as Western, as there are also Chinese that differ, take their name from the constellations and correspond to dates based on the apparent relationship between their position in the sky and the sun.
It was the astronomer Ptolemy who made known and disseminated the characteristics associated with the individual zodiac signs: it is to him that the personalities today associated with the stars are attributed.
The dates of the zodiac signs are based on the mathematical division of the year and correspond to the presence of the sun in the constellations of the sign in question. Now, in fact, a "new" zodiac sign has been inserted, Ophiuchus, which has only slightly changed the generally recognized dates but, basically, we can say that it has not brought about major changes from the astrological point of view.
