For the first time Modal was produced in 1951 in Japan: here for the first time the cellulose of beech wood was treated to create a semi-synthetic fiber. The modal fabric is therefore a kind of rayon, but produced exclusively from beech wood. We are talking about semi synthetic fiber and not simply natural fiber because although it is made from beech wood, the processing of modal requires some chemical elements. However, there are also companies such as the Austrian Lenzing which produces Tencel Modal, a particularly environmentally friendly modal that recovers 95% of the chemicals used in the production of the fiber in order to preserve the environment.
Specifically, the beech cellulose is carefully chopped and then melted. What is obtained is a viscous compound that is passed through small holes capable of generating very thin fibers. The primary modal fibers are then spun to form the finished product.
Today more and more often the modal fabric is mixed with cotton to improve the quality. Unlike what you might think from the modal name, it is therefore a quality fiber that has a natural origin and even makes the cotton it is mixed with more valuable.
