How to take care of house plants when going on vacation

Do you have to leave for a weekend or a few weeks and you don't know how to do it for your plants? No fear! If no one can take care of it, here are some useful do-it-yourself tips for irrigating balconies and terraces.

The classic method of the inverted bottle is the most used and the simplest. A useful remedy especially if you will be away for a few days: fill a plastic bottle, taking care to make a small hole in the end to ensure the correct flow of water, and insert it upside down in the jar. This way the plant will absorb water directly from the bottle.

Another method widely used because it is simple and effective is that of communicating vessels: by purchasing cones and pipes for irrigation systems and connecting them together, place one end of the pipe in the water, and the other end in the soil of the pot. This way the plant will absorb water when it needs it.

A little less known but quite popular is the wick irrigation method which consists of using cotton threads whose ends are inserted one into the soil of the pot, the other into the water container.

More cumbersome but more effective is the drip irrigation system: it can be automatic, thanks to the presence of a battery-operated programmer to be connected to the tap, or made from scratch directly by you. In the first hypothesis, it will be sufficient to purchase a timed programmer and connect it to the irrigation pipes that will carry the water for the supply of your plants. In the second case, if you want to build an irrigation system yourself, you can do it by taking a tank, which once drilled ad hoc, you will connect to the irrigation pipes as in the image on the side.

There is another simple and immediately ready irrigation method (which, however, is not suitable for all plants, so first try to figure out if it is right for you). This is the hydro-gel method: there are small gel capsules on the market that, if previously wet in water, absorb it, releasing it gradually once placed on the soil.
