Fasd: FAS, ARND, ARBD / The problems of the newborn due to alcohol consumption during pregnancy

The consumption of alcohol during pregnancy can represent a real risk for the unborn child. The resulting damage can be evident in the child, through physical birth defects and behavioral abnormalities during the growth phase.

Depending on the severity of these damages we speak of FAS, fetal alcohol syndrome, ARND, alcohol related neurobehavioral development disorders; ARBD, alcohol related birth defects: a set of discomforts of varying intensity and nature called the spectrum of fetal-alcoholic disorders, FASD.

Fetal alcohol syndrome, FAS, is the most serious pathology. The effects can be of various types and manifest themselves in different ways. The main damages of fetal alcohol syndrome are physical malformations, in particular to the face, delays in psychophysical development, behavioral alterations, attention and learning deficits, memory, relationship and social integration problems.

ARND indicates the presence of an intellectual disability and behavioral, cognitive, learning problems, adaptation, performance and mood disorders. ARBD involves physical defects including heart, skeletal, kidney, ear and also ocular malformations, in the absence of apparent neurobehavioral or brain disorders.

The damage caused by these diseases is unfortunately permanent, and the child is forced to live with them for life, without being able to have treatments that mitigate the effects, but it is essential to know that FASD is 100% avoidable if alcohol is not consumed. while pregnant.
