What are Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening Tests (NIPTs) for?

The goals of prenatal diagnosis

The term prenatal diagnosis means a set of tests and screenings to monitor the health of the fetus during pregnancy, from the first weeks of embryonic development until delivery. We are therefore talking about advanced diagnostic techniques that allow us to identify chromosomal abnormalities, fetal malformations and genetic mutations.
On the one hand, the prenatal diagnosis highlights the state of health of the fetus, allows the identification of any pathologies and therapeutic pathways, on the other hand it reassures the parents and allows them to monitor the progress of pregnancy in a non-invasive but reliable and precise manner throughout the gestation period.

What NIPTs are and for what purposes they are performed

NIPTs or non-invasive prenatal screening tests have been introduced in the last 30 years. They analyze the maternal blood and the DNA of the fetus contained in it to provide precise information on the health of the unborn child. These tests are indicated from the tenth week of gestation, when fetal DNA is identifiable in the maternal blood.

An effective, reliable and non-invasive test: GENIUM

The Genium test is part of the non-invasive prenatal screenings (NIPT): it is quick and safe and provides an answer on the presence of chromosomal abnormalities of the fetus, analyzing the DNA fragments of the fetus present in the maternal blood. It is performed with a normal maternal blood sample starting from the 10th week of gestation. Genium can be performed by all pregnant women and is very important because it avoids the risks associated with invasive diagnostic tests. In any case, screening cannot replace diagnostic tests, such as amniocentesis.
This test is indicated in women of any age and risk category in the case of single pregnancies, twins, and medically assisted procreation.
