Taipei: Do you read about gay marriages?

For more than two months, in Taipei he has been discussing - and indignant Catholics and conservative secularists - a bill aimed at recognizing a new type of family: one made up of people of the same sex. It would be a real revolution that would pave the way for similar changes throughout the Asian world.

The bill, still not defined in detail, takes into consideration three areas of relationship: that of marriage between people of the same sex, that of a legally protected couple and that of a new concept of family in which more people would be admitted to recognition. of a stable relationship, surpassing only the two people of a traditional marriage or cohabiting couple.

This law will also take into consideration changes in terminology to designate the couple: no longer "husband" and "wife", but simply "companions" or "the two parties". "If everything goes quickly, probably in a year we will move on to the second phase, but given the complexity of the matter, the differences in the field and the strong opposition, it is difficult for everything to happen so quickly", commented Professor Ning, an expert on the subject and a researcher at a university in New Taipei.

And the protests were certainly not long in coming: on 30 November last in the capital a demonstration in favor of the traditional family took place, promoted by many movements including exponents of the Catholic world, and in which about 250 thousand people would have taken part. .
