Sex: the contraceptive gel arrives

In addition to preventing pregnancy, this innovative method of contraception should also protect against sexually transmitted infections. The gelatinous compound, which is activated only in contact with sperm, should be applied 2-3 days before sexual intercourse.

For the time being, only tube tests have been carried out, which have been found to be positive. Tests on guinea pigs will follow in the coming weeks and, only later, also on humans.

If this gel spreads as a new contraceptive method, will birth control pills and condoms take a back seat? In our opinion, no, but this gel could be an added security to experience sex safely, without having to worry (too much) about STDs and unwanted pregnancies.
