Tiziana Cantone: a red bench to remind us that we are not alone

A red bench in Piazza Duca d’Aosta. This is how Naples decided to remember Tiziana Cantone, the girl who took her own life at the age of 30 after the diffusion of a hard movie starring her. Above, a plaque “Protect, shelter, but first protect yourself. In memory of Tiziana Cantone ". This effective gesture, inserted in the context of the world day against violence against women, has a symbolic value: it aims to raise public awareness, especially the younger slice, on the theme of violence and the impacting power of the web.

The initiative was warmly supported by the Equal Opportunities Commission of the Campania Region, by the Municipality of Naples and, in particular, by Tiziana's mother, Maria Teresa Giglio. The woman, still visibly shaken by the loss of her daughter, "The meaning of his life", strives every day so that justice can be done to her. "Now Tiziana has stopped being invisible and is recognized for what she really was, a wonderful girl, very sweet and empathetic", this is the comment of Mrs. Giglio, her voice broken by tears. The woman also lashes out against the indifference of what she calls the Naples well, which she considered morally responsible for the death of Tiziana.

It was the web that killed Tiziana

What killed Tiziana was the macho culture that subjected her to an unprecedented media pillory after the revenge porn episode she was victim. This English-speaking expression means the unauthorized publication of pornographic material in a plan of revenge against one's former partner. Tiziana was a fragile and vulnerable girl, marked by the abandonment of her father. "A little girl in a world of adults", so called her a doctor who had treated her, who had tied herself to a wrong man, deluding herself that she had finally found someone who could put all her pieces back together. But it was the very man she trusted who exploited her weaknesses and involved her in a perverse game of cheating and hard videos.

The Italian law on revenge porn

On 17 July 2019, the Italian Parliament definitively approved the revenge porn bill which provides for a sentence of between one and six years of imprisonment and a fine of between 5,000 and 15,000 euros. The death of Tiziana has speeded up the biblical times of Italian justice and has opened our eyes to an increasingly alarming phenomenon, especially among young people who often do not have the perception of the dangers that can be run online. In this regard, a study by the National Adolescent Observatory, conducted in 2018 in collaboration with the skuola-net portal, showed that 19% of adolescents between 14 and 19 years send their sexual images electronically.

Girls, you don't have to be ashamed!

From now on that bench will be there to remind the girls that they are not alone, that Tiziana's death was not in vain, but that it can serve to help people who are in the same situation as her to find the courage to report and save themselves. . In cases like these, the only people who have to feel shame are those who illegally spread and violate the intimacy of others.
