Diaphragm: what it is and how to use it

Read the fact sheet on contraceptive methods

The principle

The diaphragm is a disk (shaped like a cap) of latex that varies between 5.5 and 9.5 cm in diameter. It is inserted into the vagina up to the height of the cervix. This allows the entry of spermatozoa to be blocked. To be truly effective, its use must be combined with that of a spermicide (in cream or foam) to be placed inside the diaphragm. In this way, in the event that some spermatozoa pass through the diaphragm they will then be held and immobilized by the gel, which acts as a second barrier. The diaphragm is applied before sexual intercourse and must be left on for the following 6 hours. The first application is done by the doctor, then it can be applied independently.

Less risk and more pleasure with safe sex

The advantages

  • It is easy to use and discreet: it is inserted in an autonomous way immediately before sexual intercourse, without the need for a doctor, and you are not forced to undergo treatment.
  • It is 97% reliable and respects the natural cycle.
  • You are independent.

The drawbacks

  • You need to know your body well: some young women may have difficulty inserting the diaphragm.
  • The pose forces you to interrupt the relationship at the moment of greatest arousal.
  • During the first intercourse with the diaphragm, it is recommended to use another contraceptive method at the same time so that its use is safe.
  • The partner must absolutely not use a condom since the friction of the two materials could cause tears, completely canceling the effect.

Attention

The diaphragm never protects against sexually transmitted diseases. It is therefore to be avoided if you are not sure of your partner; in this case, the use of condoms is essential.

How to get it

You can make an appointment with your gynecologist or an obstetrician to have the diaphragm adjusted according to your anatomy. An expert should then be consulted again in case of pregnancy, miscarriage or miscarriage, weight gain or loss of more than 5 kg and in case of discomfort. A medical prescription is mandatory and can be purchased at the pharmacy.

To whom it is recommended

This contraceptive method is particularly suitable for women who do not wish to use the pill or the IUD. It represents a good alternative to non-hormonal contraception. It can be used by all women, whether they have already been pregnant or not. It is also recommended for those who do not have regular intercourse or do not wish to put the spiral permanently.
