Sergio Mattarella is the new President of the Republic

It is the constitutional judge indicated by the Democratic Party, Sergio Mattarella, the new president of the Italian Republic, who has passed the quorum, thus becoming the twelfth tenant of the Quirinale.

Mattarella, endowed with a long institutional experience, thus follows Giorgio Napolitano, outgoing president after 8 years in office. Six hundred and sixty-five votes in favor of the new head of state, whose election was welcomed in the Chamber of Deputies by a long applause and by a visibly moved Napolitano.

Former defense minister and constitutional judge, Sergio Mattarella was an exponent of the Christian Democrats - his father, Bernardo, was one of the founders - in which he served for many years, of the Italian People's Party and Margherita. He has been minister several times, was deputy premier of D "Alema and is one of the founders of the Democratic Party. Since 2011 he has been a judge of the Constitutional Court by parliamentary appointment.

In addition to the Pd, Scelta Civica, Sel, the group of Socialists and Autonomies and, after the tensions of the last two days that seemed to fear internal splits, also the block of the Popular Alliance (Ncd-Udc) lined up in favor of Mattarella. The Forza Italia deputies, on the other hand, remained on their own positions, opting for the white ballot. Lega Nord and Fratelli d "Italia voted for Vittorio Feltri, the M5S for Imposimato, while the grillini exiles were divided between Mattarella and Stefano Rodotà.
