Let's talk about intimate hygiene.

Q: Is it true that personal hygiene needs change with age?
A: Certainly: the surfaces of our body, both external and internal, are rapidly colonized, after birth, by "good" microorganisms, whose essential function is to create an unfavorable environment for the development of "bad" ones. In the fertile age, from adolescence to menopause, the production of estrogen favors the development of "friendly" lactobacilli that create an acidic environment [3.8 - 4.5] that must be maintained: here then it is appropriate that the intimate cleanser is acidic [with a pH around 4 - 4.5]. In the other ages of life, on the other hand, i.e. in childhood and after menopause, in the absence of estrogen, the presence of acidophilic lactobacilli is reduced and the pH increases, the mucosa is more delicate and sensitive: even the intimate cleanser must have a higher pH. high [around 5 - 5.5], less aggressive.

Q: Do I have to have special intimate hygiene during my period?
A: It is absolutely essential to carry out thorough intimate hygiene during the menstrual period! It is important to use pure cotton pads, especially at night, which must be changed frequently, not only in relation to the abundance of the flow. The most suitable intimate cleanser is with an acidic pH [3.5 - 4.5]. On the other hand, it is not recommended to abuse vaginal douches, because they can alter the bacterial flora, consisting of lactobacilli, normally present, which protects against the aggression of pathogens, or infections.

Let's talk about menstruation.

Q: Is it normal that I have frequent urge to urinate during my period?
A: It is absolutely normal because during menstruation there are hormonal changes and changes in the distribution of body fluids. It is then necessary to evaluate whether there is an underlying infection if you also notice burning during urination. However, the advice is to drink at least 2 liters of water a day during the menstrual flow.

Q: Every month, between the 10th and 15th day after my period, I always notice the presence of a white liquid. Is this normal or is it a sign of disease?
A: These are normal vaginal discharge that occur in the ovulatory period, about halfway through the cycle, and are not a sign of infection. Instead, they are an indirect signal that ovulation has occurred.

Let's talk about infections.

Q: I have been using the birth control pill for 6 months. I often suffer from an annoying itching and burning after intercourse and even washing myself repeatedly with soothing products I have poor results. It almost always happens in the last two days of the pill, many recommend creams but I would like a more drastic cure ...
A: It is not uncommon, while taking the pill, that nonspecific vaginitis or related to a fungal infection (Candida more frequently) occurs. In these cases it is useful to use specific products to prevent recurrent vaginitis or, if you notice discharge whitish to "ricotta", typical of Candida, associated with intense itching, it is advisable to use specific antifungal drugs (creams or vaginal pessaries).

Q: How can I prevent a recurrence of Candida?
A: There are some simple rules to follow: treat the first episode well, try to identify and, if possible, remove or correct predisposing conditions (for example, excessive use of antibiotics), use (but only for limited periods and on indication of the doctor) antifungal douches during menstruation or after sexual intercourse, avoid, during intimate hygiene, movements from the anus to the vagina, avoid clothing that is too tight (pants!) and underwear made of synthetic material that does not " to breathe".
