Face tonic: what is it for and why you must not forget to use it!

The tonic, although it is a product often overlooked during the skincare routine, can bring many benefits and it is easy to find it on the market in many types: from the most delicate and soothing, to those with purifying properties. To complete the treatment session, don't forget to apply a good anti-aging moisturizer. And to enhance its effects? Take 5 minutes to relax and use the jade roller: in the following video we explain how to use it.

What is the face tonic?

The facial skin tonic is a liquid usually contained in a bottle with a dispenser cap, with cleansing and purifying properties. The delicate formula contains active ingredients useful for refreshing and revitalizing the skin, rebalancing the pH of the epidermis and preparing the skin for subsequent treatments.
It should be used after normal facial cleansing not only to further cleanse the skin, but to visibly reduce pores, reducing the amount of dirt that settles on them and causes acne, dullness and marks.

Often during facial cleansing, antioxidant substances that are precious for the skin are also removed, which the tonic replenishes, this is one of the reasons for using it. Designed to be a humectant, tonic or toner, it will help retain moisture to the skin, leaving it fresh, hydrated and younger looking.

Some types of tonics have a slight exfoliating power that eliminates dead cells by counteracting the phenomenon of ingrown hair, reducing acne, blackheads and wrinkles. The end result will be significantly healthier skin.

How it works and when to use it

When should the toner be used on the face? Is it better in the morning or in the evening? Here are the answers to the most common questions.
The tonic is a product found in the form of a lotion with a very liquid texture similar to water. It is very important because its function is to rebalance the acidity that the skin has naturally, considering, above all, the hardness and limescale that characterize most of the tap water with which we wash. In practice, using the tonic means cleaning the skin even more deeply after the usual cleansing, eliminating with a final gesture any residual impurities (sebum, make-up, dead cells), make-up remover (cleansing milk, oils or soaps) that can stay on the face and closing the pores.

The tonic should be used after cleansing the face, but before hydration. The frequency is daily, both in the morning and in the evening. Here are all the steps to follow.

How to apply the toner in the morning

  • Cleanse your face and pat gently with a towel
  • Dab the toner on your face after soaking a cotton ball.
  • Complete the treatment by applying a day moisturizer together with a product with spf.

How to use face tonic in the evening

  • Cleanse your face, rinse and wipe off excess water.
  • Wet a cotton pad with the toner and dab it all over your face.
  • Proceed with a movement from bottom to top going in the opposite direction to the direction of hair growth: only in this way the product will be able to penetrate under the facial hair and act in depth.
  • Finish your evening skin care beauty routine with serum, moisturizer and eye contour.

Classification of the types of tonics on the market

Not all skin types are the same, so the choice of face toner must be targeted. On the market there are different types specific for every need. Toners with alcohol-based formulas, particularly astringent and suitable for combination or oily skin, tonics with moisturizing components, perfect for dry and sensitive skin as they gently purify and rebalance hydration, and toners with formulas always based on d 'water, but enriched with substances useful for skin repair, antioxidants and toning, which also have a relaxing or anti-wrinkle function, therefore ideal for mature skin.

Here is a handy list to recap the types of face toners based on the function they perform:

  • astringent tonics to control excess sebum and minimize pores;
  • moisturizing tonics that deeply moisturize dry and arid skin;
  • soothing tonics, suitable for sensitive skin;
  • stimulating tonics to soften skin that is no longer young.

Another type of classification of the tonics on the market can be that relating to the ingredients they contain. Three main groups can be distinguished:

  • Water-based facial tonics: these are products without harmful ingredients that contain substances that are useful for preparing the skin for make-up by increasing its hydration.
  • Facial tonics based on water and glycerin: compared to the previous ones, they may contain perfume that is often the main cause of skin allergies.
  • Alcohol-based facial toners: to be used only in case of very oily skin and under the advice of a dermatologist.

Facial tonic: which one to choose based on your skin type

Once the classification of the tonic has been defined based on the various types and ingredients, the question arises: what is the perfect facial tonic for my skin? Here's how to choose it.

If your skin is oily ...
Oily skin should prefer a tonic with a gel formula, light and moisturizing, it will let the skin breathe, balancing the production of sebum.

If your skin is dry ...
For dry skin, a toner with soothing and moisturizing ingredients including hyaluronic acid, glycerin, vitamin E, chamomile and antioxidants such as green tea is better.

If your skin is sensitive ...
This type of skin should avoid tonics that contain alcohol, preferring those based on Calendula with a calming and soothing action.

If your skin is acne-prone ...
In this case the choice will have to fall on a purifying tonic, ask your dermatologist for advice.

If your skin is mature ...
Mature skin will prefer a moisturizing toner to rejuvenate the skin. The ideal are those whose formulation contains hyaluronic acid, capable of increasing skin hydration and maintaining it over time.

If your skin is dull and dull ...
For skin that appears dull and dull, try exfoliating tonics with glycolic acid. They eliminate dead cells, stimulating their renewal and at the same time giving a radiant appearance to the epidermis.
