Tokyo: tuna sold for 1.76 million

It happened during the first fish auction at the Tsukijifishmarket in the Japanese capital, the proceeds of which are given to charity. The prized 222 kilos tuna, increasingly sought after for sushi and of which Japan is the leading consumer (80% of all tuna caught worldwide), was purchased by Kiyoshi Kimura, president of a local restaurant chain. The purchase of the first fish is a tradition of the city of Tokyo and is also seen as a good luck charm for the buyer and a "blessing" for the new season and for the new year.

Despite the constant warnings from environmentalists, who say there is an ever-decreasing quantity of specimens and are launching the "extinction risk alarm, Japan (and not only) does not seem to have any intention of putting aside the consumption of tuna, appreciated in every corner of the world and whose belly (or the most valuable part) can cost $ 24 per serving.
