Typhoon in the Philippines: 10 thousand dead

Yesterday, 9 November, the super typhoon Hayan hit the coasts of the Philippines causing thousands of deaths. It is one of the most violent hurricanes in history, which mainly hit the island of Leyte, destroyed for at least 70% of its territory. For now we are talking about a tragic toll: 10,000 dead and thousands of missing.

The storm is moving towards Vietnam, where it is expected for Monday, although it is losing intensity. Over 600,000 people evacuated.

According to estimates, the families affected are 944,586, equal to 4.28 million people. More than 40% of the 4 million people involved are children under 18 years of age. This was announced by Unicef in an official note, expressing concern. The Crisis Unit of the Farnesina, through the embassy of Italy in the Philippines, is undergoing checks on the involvement of compatriots in the tragedy, but it seems that there are no Italians involved.
