Buying used cars: what to check

Let's start with the brakes

First of all, let's think of the brakes, which are one of the fundamental components of the car. They must work perfectly. If the warning light comes on immediately after starting and goes off shortly after, the system is not working properly. While driving, pay close attention to any grinding sounds when you step on the brake pedal. This noise indicates that the brake pads need to be replaced.

Don't forget the broadcast

If you experience a loud and vibrant sound when accelerating or cornering, it means that the transmission is not in optimal condition, and this is not recommended when you are purchasing a used car. The advice is to try to gradually release the clutch in third or fourth with the accelerator pressed. If the car takes too long to stall, there may be a transmission problem. Then try to slowly release the clutch without pressing the accelerator. If the engine stalls suddenly or if it stops smoothly, the clutch could be damaged

If the engine doesn't work it's a big problem

If the oil smells like petrol or its color is dark, it's time to change it. The oil also needs to be topped up when it reaches the level indicated by the notch on the dipstick. If you experience strange noises such as clicking or screeching sounds there could be problems with the distribution. Dull thumps, on the other hand, could indicate a bearing problem.

Changing the battery costs money

Before proceeding to buy a used car it would be good to test the starter motor by starting the ignition for 2 seconds, simultaneously checking the voltmeter: if the battery has a voltage lower than 12 volts it is oxidized and does not maintain or no longer accept the recharge.

Beware of the skilometers!

Always use common sense, beyond what is reported by the odometer. There are tons of "skimmed" cars on the market! It is advisable to observe the wear of the vehicle, check the brake pedal, the bodywork and the tires. If in doubt, check the revisions book and any traces of tampering. If the car has traveled a few kilometers, and the seller's explanations are not satisfactory in relation to the appearance of the vehicle, contact a mechanic. And also take a look at the paint, because the lack of uniformity could mean that it is a damaged car. Same goes for closing doors and trunk, if it is not "crunchy" ... watch out! there is trouble ahead.

The steering wheel must not make noise or resist

Check that the steering wheel does not emit strange noises or oppose excessive resistance when you turn it, it could mean that the steering fluid level is too low. If it vibrates strongly, then the drive belt could be damaged.

Check the suspension

If the vehicle skids or creaks when turning, or if it rocks or shivers at moderate speeds, there may be suspension problems.

Tires are very important

We have repeated it many times, tires are essential for our safety because they are the link between us and the asphalt. Uneven wear between the various wheels could indicate an alignment or suspension problem. Check that there are no nails or stones stuck, breaks, damage, scratches, holes or bubbles. Also pay attention to the rims, which must be intact.

Always check that the front and rear lights are working

At night and during the day, check the brake lights and turn signal lights before buying a used car. At night, on the other hand, check that the front lights (position, daytime, low beam, high beam) and the rear lights are correctly turned on. Also pay attention to the LEDs, which work correctly.

Fines in the drawer

Ask if there are legal proceedings in progress involving the vehicle, or if there are fines that have not been paid or if the vehicle is subject to detention or restrictions on traffic. And check if the vehicle has been involved in accidents, in this case it may not be possible to make the change of ownership.
