Dry lips: tips and remedies to make them soft and plump

Do you have dry and chapped lips? Surely in addition to not being beautiful to look at, they are also annoying to bear because they pull, are irritated and red. The face, as well as the hands, are the parts of the body most exposed to bad weather and UV rays, which is why they can often be affected. Before understanding how to make lips soft, check out the video below with the recipe for a DIY lip scrub.

Main causes behind dry lips

  • Flu and cold

When we have a fever or a cold, our whole body tends to become dehydrated and consequently our lips also appear chapped and dry. It is important, in all these cases, to increase the daily intake of fluids

  • Dehydration

Among the main causes of dry lips there is dehydration, or an insufficient hydration of the body. If we do not drink enough water, the body is deficient and all the tissues will tend to dry out. Even the lips, which appear as a thin and delicate layer of skin, will be affected by manifesting dryness and cracking.

  • Allergic reactions

Sometimes it is some components present in lip products (lipsticks, lip glosses, lip balms) that trigger a real allergic reaction that affects the lips and makes them appear swollen, red, chapped.

  • Weathering

Wind, cold, UV rays are just some examples of the atmospheric agents responsible for dry lips. All these elements can affect the thin layer that protects the lips, evaporating the liquids and making them wither. Only by restoring this layer can lips be hydrated and healthy.

  • Vitamin deficiencies

At the base of dry lips there is often a lack of important substances such as calcium and iron, as well as vitamins of group B, C and A. Only the integration of these substances can help make the lips plump and hydrated.

  • Infections

Among the lip infections there is one, theHerpes Simplex, which causes irritation and dryness to the entire labial mucosa. In severe cases, painful lesions can also appear, and it is best to seek medical attention immediately.

  • Angular cheilitis (Perlèche)

The bad habit of frequently wetting the lips with saliva, in the long run is deleterious for the labial mucosa as the tongue "destroys" the thin protective veil that is on the surface, contributing to their dryness.

  • Cheilitis

Cheilitis can be considered a real disease of chapped lips: cuts in the corners of the mouth, scabs, redness and burning are just some of the symptoms of cheilitis. In all these cases, you should immediately contact your doctor.

Dry lips: natural remedies to get rid of them

To effectively treat dry lips, there are a number of very effective natural remedies. Let's see what they are and how they work against chapped lips.

  • Stick, oil, balm, butter, there are so many lip products on the market. The important thing is to always choose natural protective and emollient products, which contain substances that are useful for protecting the lips and keeping them soft. These include shea butter, almond oil and coconut oil.

  • Olive oil and honey: two ingredients that are as simple as they are effective. A few drops of extra virgin olive oil will be enough to soften even the most chapped lips; the same goes for honey, to be applied in small quantities to heal the small cuts on the lips that could get worse.
  • Coconut oil: precious ally to protect lips from chapping and forget about dryness forever. Keep a glass jar of coconut oil in the fridge and let it solidify in the cold. At this point, use it as a real lip butter. Take some with your fingers and apply it on the lip mucosa with a light massage.
  • Cow or vegetable yogurt: take a small amount of yogurt and add a little honey, in this way you will get a real lip treatment that is easy to apply and super effective against dryness.
  • In addition to the products just mentioned, there is "something" else you can do to ensure your lips are hydrated and plumped. Drink a lot of water, for example, as dehydration also and especially affects the labial mucosa. At least two liters a day, helping you with unsweetened herbal teas and infusions.
  • However, the best natural remedy remains to follow a balanced diet, making sure to integrate all the macronutrients through portions of fruit, vegetables, proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
