Natural contraception: what you need to know

Before we start exploring natural contraceptive methods, it is important to point this out. These methods ARE NOT SCIENTIFICALLY RELIABLE and are only suitable for COUPLES WHO MAY BE LOOKING FOR PREGNANCY. If you DO NOT WANT PREGNANCY, rely on SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN CONTRACEPTIVE METHODS - contact your doctor for more information!

Interrupted coitus

The method of ejaculation control has always existed: when he feels that he is about to ejaculate, the man exits his partner's vagina. The technique of interrupted coitus with extra-vaginal ejaculation involves 15 to 30% of failure, which makes it a very ineffective method. In addition to the frustration experienced by both men and women, this technique by no means excludes the probability of fertilization. Sperm are present in the urethra and the male secretions that come out during sexual intercourse can, therefore, be fertile. Furthermore, an "ejaculation on the vulva does not always prevent the sperm from returning to the uterus, especially if the secretions are abundant. The only advantage of this method? It is available in any situation ...

The calendar

It is the famous technique of the Ogino-Knaus doctor. It consists in determining the woman's peri-ovulatory period, during which it is recommended not to have intercourse. This period is determined by the duration of the two previous menstrual cycles, taking into account that ovulation occurs from 12 to 16 days before menstruation. This method works only if the cycle is extremely regular, and there is about a 15% probability of bankruptcy.

The cervical mucus method (Billings method)

This method has the merit of affecting all women, even those who have long or disturbed cycles. It is based on the observation of changes and the quality of the female cervical mucus. During the ovulatory period, the secretions are abundant and viscous: this is the moment in which one must avoid having sexual intercourse (between 7 and 9 days). Its reliability is equal to 99%, which is why it is the most effective of the natural contraception.

The thermal method

The period of ovulation is evidenced by the fact that at this moment, in the woman's body, there is a thermal difference of 0.5 ° C. The body temperature drops at the moment of ovulation and after it rises rapidly. To determine her fertile period, the woman must measure her temperature every morning and report it on a curve that will highlight its peak. Basal temperature should be measured using a very accurate thermometer and always upon waking, before getting up and doing anything else. The couple must refrain from having intercourse throughout the first part of the cycle, that is, between the first day of menstruation and the third consecutive day of high temperature. Warning: there are numerous factors that can perturb the basal temperature (infections, fever, wake up time). This method, therefore, is anything but reliable!

The cycle-thermal method

It collects the three previous methods, and is undoubtedly the most effective. It involves making a graph of the menstrual cycles, also taking note daily of the body temperature and the state of the cervical mucus. This combination makes it possible to better define the period at risk.

The method of breastfeeding and amenorrhea

It is the moment after giving birth, when the woman is breastfeeding and has not yet started having her period again. Sexual intercourse is therefore without risk if:

- you gave birth less than 6 months ago

- you haven't had your period yet

- breastfeed your baby

- the interval between feedings does not exceed 6 hours

If all these conditions are met, this method is 98% effective.

The contraceptive computer

These are urinary strips for sale in pharmacies, contraceptive systems that calculate the level of hormones present in the urine and indicate the probable date of ovulation. Also used as a procreation aid, this method lets you know when you can or can't have intercourse.
