The importance of water

The functions of water

  • Water irrigates the whole body, permanently feeds the 50 billion cells that compose it, and allows the chemical exchanges that take place without interval within the organism. It is found everywhere: in the blood, in the organs, in the cartilages, in fat mass, muscles and teeth.
  • It serves to keep the internal body temperature constant. When the temperature of the body tends to rise (because it is hot, because you have a fever or you have made a great physical effort) the water disposes of the excess heat through perspiration.
  • It allows the elimination of waste and toxins that clog the organism. The blood is filtered by the kidneys, which collect all the waste elements and dilute them in water and then pour it all into the bladder, from which they are evacuated from the body in the form of urine.

The risks of dehydration

Being dehydrated means getting below 60% water in the body. Dehydration is bad for the body and manifests itself in different ways, depending on its level.

  • 1-2% dehydration: performance (physical and intellectual) is already starting to deteriorate;
  • 2-4% dehydration: performance drops by 3-20%;
  • 4-6% dehydration: performance drops by 20-30%, difficulty concentrating and severe headaches appear;
  • 6-8% dehydration: performance drops over 30%, tingling and numbness are felt in the extremities;
  • 10% dehydration: the functioning of the organs is threatened;
  • beyond 15% dehydration: you are in danger of life.

The organism cannot be deprived of water for more than 2 or 3 days when one maintains a regular rhythm of life and for more than 5 days if one stops any type of activity and remains immobile.

Maintain water balance

Maintaining a good water balance is simple: the volume of water eliminated from the body must be compensated by an equivalent intake.

  • The body contains 40-50 liters of water.
  • 2.5-3 liters are lost daily through perspiration, urine and faeces.
  • Every day it is therefore necessary to supply the body with that same quantity of liquids (1.5-2 liters of pure water and the rest of foods that contain it, such as fruit and vegetables).
  • The amount of water eliminated varies considerably according to temperature, hygrometry (the rate of water in the air), altitude, physical activity, basic metabolism and hormones. it must therefore be adjusted on the basis of these factors.
