Birth of Egyptian astrology

Predicting the date of the flood of the Nile was important for the Egyptians. They realized that the flood was starting as soon as the star Sirius appeared on the eastern horizon, at the same time as the sun (a phenomenon called "heliacal rising" of Sirius). The flood of the Nile allowed the flooding of the banks and therefore the fertilization of the lands, so astrology went hand in hand with agriculture, the cycle of the seasons and the vegetation.

The only planet that truly fascinated the Egyptians was the Sun, due to the regularity of its path. The great priests of Heliopolis, an ancient sacred city, taught that the god of the sun, Ra, appeared in different forms according to the various phases of the day, which correspond to the 4 ages of man. The morning sun was represented by a child , the midday one from an adult or a falcon, the setting sun from an old man, and the midnight one from the spoils ofOsiris in the underworld.

The year was divided into 12 months. Each month was divided, in turn, into 3 periods of 10 days, the ancestors of the decans still used by contemporary popular astrology. Their oldest representation is found in the fifth dynasty tomb (around 2000 BC).
