Infections, 1st cause of male infertility

Bacterial infections are increasingly causing male infertility problems. In most cases, in the absence of symptoms, men do not know they have this pathology which, as a rule, is discovered only on the occasion of a desire for paternity that is hard to materialize; yet "infertility is a real problem that is constantly increasing." There are more and more cases of men with infertility problems dictated by infections ", explains Manuel Pensis, referent of the andrology laboratory of ProCrea, Center of Reproductive Medicine of Lugano, in Switzerland In particular, there is an increase in patients with HPV, E.coli and Chlamydia: these are asymptomatic infections, but which can cause infertility or otherwise damage the quality of the spermatic fluid.

In addition to the risk of causing cancer to one's partner, the presence of HPV in the seminal fluid can cause asthenozoospermia, a reduced or absent sperm motility which is a frequent cause of infertility in men. The motility of spermatozoa, together with the their quantity is a fundamental indicator of the reproductive abilities of a man.On average, a normal seminal fluid must contain at least 50% of motile spermatozoa. It follows that a reduced motility causes a state of infertility.
