Famous Chunkies: What if famous people have extra pounds? Here's what they would look like ...

His name is Alex Solis, he is an artist, and he lives in Chicago. Married, with two children and a pitbull, he recently ended up in the spotlight for his Famous Chunkies project, in which he re-imagined some of the most famous pop culture characters (from Batman to Super Mario, so to speak) in a "chunky" version. "or with a few (indeed, more than a few) extra pounds. We contacted him and asked him a couple of questions to better understand what prompted him to create this beautiful - and hilarious - series of illustrations.

Famous Chunkies is definitely a creative and visually fun project, but what is the real goal you wanted to achieve?
Watching an episode of Ninja Turtles with my daughter, we found ourselves laughing and joking and wondering how they could be so fast and fit on a pizza diet. From a funny moment I realized that several cartoons seem to be sending the wrong message to children. Initially I just wanted to create the illustration of the turtle, but I immediately realized that it could become a great way to raise the public's sensitivity - especially children - about the damage of unhealthy nutrition.

How long did it take you to make the illustrations?
I'm not done making them yet, actually. I plan to create 100 in all. I am about halfway through the work, but I will continue to publish them one by one on my Instagram page and also on my official website.

How did you choose the characters?
Sincerely? It's quite random, but I definitely want characters who are known by everyone and who are part of the best-known entertainment culture, to be able to reach as many people as possible.

This isn't your first project where food is part of the illustrations. Do you consider yourself a "foodie"?
More than anything else, food is a common denominator for everyone. I mean, who does not eat, even if only for mere necessity? It's a great way to connect with people and capture their interest, precisely because it's a topic everyone can relate to ...
