Coronavirus, how to disinfect the mobile phone

It has been proven that the mobile phone is the object we come into contact with most often in the course of a day. According to the University of San Diego, we would touch it 110 to 150 times a day, thus making it an accessory on which many germs and bacteria accumulate. During this period marked by the Coronavirus emergency it is even more important to pay attention to personal hygiene and to the cleaning of the surfaces that surround us. At the moment, it is not known with certainty how long Covid-19 survives on various materials. For this reason it is essential to wash your hands often but also to disinfect the surfaces that we touch most often and that come into contact with the outside.

In this article we explain how to clean your smartphone, the object that we place in at least ten different places during the day and which can host up to 10 times the bacteria of a toilet seat. This simple operation allows you to reduce the risk of "touching" potential viruses. Furthermore, remember that in this period of quarantine, we can carry out many activities that we would not normally do due to lack of time or desire:

1. Choice of cloth and disinfectant

To disinfect your mobile phone it is important to use a soft, non-abrasive cloth. In fact, if you rub the screen with a rough fabric, you risk not only getting annoying halos that are difficult to get rid of, but also scratching the material. The most suitable cloths are those in microfibre, or those for glasses, in deerskin or suede. To clean the joints, the various holes and the outline of the frame, however, you have to use a cotton swab.

Normally, to disinfect inert surfaces, disinfectants based on alcohol, bleach or ammonia are preferred. At the moment, these products have proven to be the best for cleaning objects that came into contact with the outside during the Coronavirus emergency. However, both Apple and Samsung advise against the use of these detergents to clean the mobile phone, because they are very aggressive and can damage both the coatings and the internal functions of the phone. It is sufficient to choose soap, such as mild hand soap or dishes, diluted in lukewarm water. Alternatively, you can use disinfectant wipes or gels specifically for cleaning your smartphone (see options on Amazon).

2. Disinfect carefully

Before cleaning your mobile phone, you need to turn it off - airplane mode is not recommended -, disconnect it from any power source and remove any cover, which can be disinfected even with stronger products as long as you dry it carefully. Subsequently, moisten the cloth with soap diluted in warm water and pass it over the entire surface of the smartphone, making small circular movements. It is absolutely not recommended to spray the liquid directly on the phone or any other device, because it would risk entering the various cavities and damaging the interior. For the joints, slightly moisten a cotton swab or a soft-bristled toothbrush, without rubbing excessively.

As for the cover, it is important to pay attention to the material it is made of. In fact, if it is made of plastic, the same type of moistened fabric used for the cell phone is fine. If in leather, it is advisable to use a cotton pad, the ones used to remove make-up, and use a minimum amount of product, to prevent it from releasing annoying lint that must then be removed later.

3. Dry carefully

Once both the smartphone and the cover have been cleaned and disinfected, both must be dried carefully to remove moisture. Again, rough and abrasive fabrics are not used, but the same material as the cloth used previously. Only when the device it is completely dry you can turn it on again. Obviously, after completing these steps, it is necessary to wash your hands well to remove the germs and bacteria with which you have come into contact. The best strategy is to rub them with soap for at least 20 seconds before rinsing them and be careful not to touch your face and eyes immediately after touching your phone.

Finally, it is good to know that there are ultraviolet lamps on the market (they can be found on Amazon starting from € 10), which radically eliminate germs from surfaces, and there are some special ones for smartphones. Likewise, there are compressed air cans useful for cleaning deep into cavities, as in the case of the entry of sand into the joints of the telephone.
