(F) luxury goods: Boldrini asks for a reduction in VAT on sanitary napkins

Here we are, once again talking about tampon tax, pink tax or simply the tax on sanitary towels.
Although we have been talking about it quite constantly for more than a year, we have decided to open a column to monitor the situation and update you with all the news and developments of this matter, which is becoming a feminist emblem in all respects.

What happens with the sanitary pads?

If you are in the dark about the whole story, let's do a little review: currently in Italy, the VAT on sanitary towels, tampons, cups and everything related to the world of menstruation is taxed at 22%.
This implies a price increase due to the fact that for the taxman, hygienic products for menstruation are a luxury good, superfluous and not essential goods.

Sanitary pads, after all, only cost a few euros and it's true! But it must be considered that for some families, especially if they are numerous, products such as sanitary pads but also diapers or razor blades for shaving can constitute a burden of a few tens of euros which, however, have a certain value for a family in difficulty. It must also be recognized that menstruation is not a choice but a biological and essential event for about 40 years in a woman's life and that therefore it is neither right nor logical to classify menstruation products as a secondary good.

The latest motion promoted by Laura Boldrini

In recent days, MP Laura Boldrini of the Democratic Party has returned to office with the proposal to lower the VAT on sanitary pads, cups and tampons from 22% to 10%, which would still be higher than 5% in Spain and from the United Kingdom, to 5.5% of France, to Germany which, in 2020, will lower VAT from 19% to 7%, not to mention Ireland which does not apply any surcharge on the products in question.

To sign the amendment, with her 32 other deputies from various political groups, both majority and opposition after a petition that has reached 250 thousand signatures on Change.org.
