"Be a woman, they say": the video that destroys sexist phrases

Cynthia Nixon, sexist phrases and eloquent images, including Harvey Weinstein and the Pope striking the faithful Chinese on New Year's Eve. These are the three winning ingredients of the video published by Girls. Girls. Girls. Magazine that, these days, is going crazy on the web, reaching over 2 million views on Vimeo.

The title speaks for itself “Be a Lady, they said” (trad. “Be a woman, they say”).
It is a provocation for the purpose of denouncing the social pressures to which women are subjected every day. The narrator is that of Cynthia Nixon, the Miranda of “Sex and the City”, as well as a politician and civil rights activist who, in 2018, decided to run as Governor of the State of New York.

"Be sexy", "Don't be so provocative"

"Your skirt is too short", "Your skirt is too long", "Be sexy", "Don't be so provocative", "Don't be too fat", "Don't be too thin" (phrase that our dear Elodie knows all too well), but still “Go on a diet”, “Oh my God, you look like a skeleton”, “Put on your makeup”, “Be more natural”, “Don't be so sensitive”, “Don't talk too much”.

Phrases that I challenge any woman to deny that she has been addressed at least once in her life. The frenetic pace and severe tone adopted by Nixon lend themselves well to giving us the idea of social anxiety constantly experienced by women in a realistic way. And it is no wonder that many of these statements, sorry, impositions, are one in contradiction with the other. In fact, no matter who you are and the way you pose yourself, there will always be someone who will have something to say, isn't there Adele?

The time has come for us women to decide for ourselves!

The goal of the video, then, is to highlight the absurdity of the claims that patriarchal society places on women, often impossible to satisfy and therefore not worthy of our effort.

We can only approve initiatives of this type because, in an ironic and irreverent way, they manage to convey an impactful message that is not yet clear to most: there is only one person who can afford to tell a woman who to be and how to live : herself. Point.
